The London Loaf: Cycling

Cycling is a good way to slow down, in particular to slow down other traffic. The best places to practise this are narrow streets, bus lanes or bridges such as Albert Bridge. This is also a nice place to get off and take in the view.

Cycling is not good for slowing down if you are in a hurry or just generally a fast pedaller/lycra-wearer. It will often get you there more quickly than the bus and if you are susceptible to the pressure and verbal abuse of impatient drivers you might well succumb to the speed. One way to avoid this is by singing out loud, which puts you in a happy mood, keeps you moving at your own pace and encourages other road-users to give you a wide berth. If you like making up songs cycling is a great way to write lyrics. I often invent irrelevant missions for myself on the bike in order to complete tricky verses. Important to keep focused on the road though, as opposed to colliding with a parked car, which can be embarrassing.
