The London Loaf: Samosas

This is not so much a “Good Samosa Guide” (although I do plan to publish one of these eventually) as a testament to what is in my opinion the ultimate savoury snack on the move, and its myriad manifestations around the City.

Although the samosa could be seen as a fast food there are often ways to prevent yourself from falling into this trap, for instance if you ask them to heat it up you will probably have to wait until it cools down again. It’s also hard to eat a samosa whilst doing anything else, as they tend to fall apart at high temperatures, thus requiring your full attention. Some of my most memorable samosas:

•    St. Paul’s tube station – perfect symmetry.  Warmed but not too hot, no grease, just off orange in colour throughout, enough spice to wake the mouth and linger, comes with plate.
•    Piccadilly – good texture but comes wrapped in plastic. No microwave.
•    Victoria station – the shop you pass when changing between the Victoria and Circle lines. A satisfying, fat little parcel, nice thick pastry, ideal ratio of guilt to delight.
•    Highbury – an Indian restaurant – this has to be my most moving samosa experience. Went in to get a samosa after a gig and while they were making it I disappeared off to help a friend shift some boxes into his van, during which time the shop closed as it was pretty late. Returning in a panic I found the proprietor sitting alone in the restaurant waiting for me to collect my miniscule order which can’t have made him more than £1.50.
