Stitching journeys: Clare Stanhope
My work looks at journeys, mapping and traces. My own journey and also that of others. My research is based on dissecting our days, the insignificant moments that connect the events which mark the passing of time.
We don’t remember in sequential order, our memories stretch out time, moments become blurred, I want to blur the passing of time, to slow it down, to give time to reflect and process the insignificant moments that go unnoticed and undocumented but which become the foundations of our days.
My work takes the form of stitched journeys. My latest work ‘Slow Art’ uses drawings which I have completed at speed, usually within minutes or seconds, without thought or process. I then trace the journey of the line using stitch, which takes days.
Following the journey of the line is monotonous, repetitive but also poetic and beautiful. This slowing down of time allows me to contemplate and reflect upon the original moment or journey.
